Layered Sorting on Tables – A Small Feature That Makes a Big Difference

When you’re looking at lists of tickets, clients, jobs, or inventory, you often need to sort by more than one column at a time.

That’s where Layered Sorting comes in.

Normal sorting: click a column, it sorts by that one thing. Click again to reverse it.

With Layered Sorting turned on:

Click multiple columns to create a sort hierarchy (primary, secondary, tertiary, etc.)

Small numbered badges show the priority order (1, 2, 3…)

Null or empty values are handled intelligently (they sort to the bottom on ascending, top on descending)

A big “Clear Filters” button resets everything with one click

This makes digging through large datasets much faster and more natural — exactly how your brain wants to filter information.

I now include layered sorting (plus column-level searching and pagination) on almost every list/table page I build. It’s one of those quality-of-life improvements that clients notice immediately.

Little improvements like this are what turn a “functional” system into one that’s actually enjoyable to use every day.
