Hi, Michael Firey here from Fireytech Computer Repair in Tulsa!
We see a lot of broken laptop hinges, but this one was extra tricky: the metal hinge mount had completely torn loose from the top lid (the plastic had cracked and the factory adhesive failed). Worst part? When it ripped off, it also shattered the LCD screen.
Replacing the entire top lid (palmrest + lid) on this model would have cost the customer $250–$350 in parts alone. Instead, we decided to try a creative, low-cost fix using **JB Weld two-part epoxy** — and it worked perfectly.
Here’s exactly how we did it (step-by-step) so you can try it yourself or see why this is a game-changer for cracked laptop hinge mounts.
**Day 1 – The Repair**
1. Cleaned both surfaces thoroughly (alcohol wipes to remove old adhesive and oils)
2. Mixed equal parts JB Weld Steel Reinforced Epoxy (the black & gray tubes) until uniform gray
3. Applied a thin, even layer to the metal hinge plate (too much and it oozes everywhere — it’s stringy like melted cheese!)
4. Pressed the hinge firmly into place on the plastic lid and held pressure for ~60 seconds
5. Let it sit untouched for 24 hours for full cure
**Day 2 – The Stress Test (Does It Actually Hold?)**
After 24 hours we came back and put serious torque on it — twisting, pulling, and flexing the hinge exactly like normal laptop use (and then some).
Result? **Rock solid.** Zero movement, no creaking, no cracking.
We reassembled the laptop and it’s been opening/closing perfectly ever since.
**Why This Works**
JB Weld bonds metal to plastic stronger than most factory adhesives, especially when the original mount has failed. It’s heat-resistant up to 550°F, so no worries about the laptop getting warm.
**When This Fix Makes Sense**
- The plastic lid itself isn’t shattered (just the hinge mount area)
- You want to save $200–$400 vs. buying a new lid
- You’re okay with a permanent repair (this is NOT reversible)
**When to Bring It to Us Instead**
If the lid is cracked all the way through, the screen bezel is destroyed, or cables are torn — we’ll just replace the parts the right way (we stock hundreds of lids and screens).
At Fireytech Tulsa (91st & Sheridan), we’ve been saving “unfixable” laptops since 1997 — broken hinges, cracked screens, liquid damage, you name it.
