At Fireytech near 91st & Sheridan (8988 South Sheridan Rd, Suite D1, Tulsa, OK 74133), we always keep an eye out for our customers.
A few years ago we noticed a trend: a higher-than-expected number of failed Seagate spinning hard drives (both internal and external) coming through our repair shop. It was a small sample size—far from scientific—but enough to make us cautious. Seagate has Oklahoma ties, so we hated seeing it, but we started recommending Western Digital more often for traditional spinning drives.
Fast-forward to 2025: the gold standard for real-world hard drive reliability remains **Backblaze Drive Stats** (over 328,000 drives tracked in Q3 2025).
Here’s the current picture (Backblaze Q3 2025 data):
- Overall fleet Annualized Failure Rate (Aрощ): **~1.55%** (very healthy)
- Many models (including several Seagate, Toshiba, and WD drives) had **zero failures** this quarter
- Some **older Seagate 12TB/14TB models** still show elevated AFRs (as they have for years)
- **Newer high-capacity drives** (20TB+) from all all brands are performing excellently—often under 1% AFR
- Western Digital and Toshiba continue to edge out slightly lower average failure rates in most comparisons
Bottom line in 2025:
For traditional spinning (HDD) backup/external drives, **WD and Toshiba** still have the edge in reliability according to the largest public dataset.
For anyone buying a new drive today, **SSD/NVMe is the clear winner** for speed and reliability—no moving parts = dramatically lower failure rates.
